Making Titan / Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th March 2025
I made Titan over two consecutive days. On the first day I pinched the base with porcelain and then added coils. I added a foot by hand because the bottom was too flat and I did not have enough clay to carve it.
The coils were very thin. I had to work very slowly, allowing the base to dry before continuing. I was sure it was going to collapse but I slowed down. I really needed it not to collapse. While making Titan, I listened to a podcast episode about a woman who worked as a chef and felt that working in kitchens was like being in a cult. She experienced a lot of abusive behaviour and for a brief moment, when she finally climbed through the ranks, was reproducing the same cycle with the people working under her. It made me very sad. And I also intimately understood exactly what she meant when she was talking about the pressure to show that she was strong enough to take it.
I was sure Titan was going to collapse. I had mentally prepared myself but I also wanted it not to fail. I wanted this to be a lesson in salvaging, in repairing, in saving, in being so gentle with it that it would eventually let me have this one win.
On the second day, I shaved its surface and used a rib to smooth it out. I think I will also try to burnish it. I wrapped it tightly. I hope it makes it.

Titan is Saturn’s largest moon (5150km in diameter). It is the only moon with a thick atmosphere. It is the only place besides Earth that is known to have rivers, lakes and seas on its surface.
Its orbit period around Saturn is of 15 (Earth) days.
